Superfoods, such as kale and chia, have been reigning supreme in cafés and pantries across the world — but it seems their time in the sun has come to an end, as a new generation of on-trend superfoods step into the limelight.
Whole Foods has put together a list of the ingredients they reckon will grow in popularity exponentially in 2018. We have pulled out the top five to allow you to prep your recipes for the coming year, and get ahead of the trend before everyone else.
Here are the top food trends for 2018.
1. Edible flowers
Edible flowers have been garnishes on restaurant dishes for a while now, but they’re expected to arrive in cafes, bars and home cooking with full force—with lavender becoming the star of the show in 2018.
2. Super powders
Super powders like matcha, cacao and turmeric are set to keep appearing in smoothies and juice drinks — adding more fuel to our morning brew.

3. Functional mushrooms
These have mostly been used in dietary supplements, and are rather different to the average field mushroom that you would mix in with your pasta. They include varietals such as cordyceps, chaga, reishi and lion’s mane, and will be appearing in your bottled drinks and coffee cups in 2018.

4. Plant-based meat alternatives
Plants-based alternatives will become much more accessible next year, with producers swapping out fish and meat for a vegetarian-friendly option. Expect high quality swap-outs though, with items such as tuna-free sushi made with tomatoes, and veggie burgers that bleed like real meat appearing on menus across the globe.
We know this initially screams ‘greasy fast food’, but the 2018 taco will be a lot different from your average food court pick-up. Instead look out for seaweed shells, grain-free tortillas and paleo-friendly creations in the new year.
