Melania Trump will succeed Michelle Obama as First Lady of the United States. While much has been documented about her husband, she has stayed relatively quiet and on the sidelines during the campaign trail. So here are the five things you need to know about the new woman stepping into the White House.

Trump is mother to 10-year-old Barron and is said to be a very dedicated parent. When asked about her husband’s political ambitions, she stressed that although she supported him wholeheartedly, her priority was always going to be her son. “I’m raising him and this is the age he needs a parent at home,” she told Barbara Walters in an interview.

Trump is only the second First Lady ever to be born outside of the United States. She was born in Novo Mesto in 1970 in an area of Slovenia that was then part of Yugoslavia. The other was London-born Louisa Adams, the wife of John Quincy Adams who became president in 1825.

She stayed on the sidelines for much of her husband’s presidential campaign, only making one very public speech (where she was criticised for plagiarising Michelle Obama). “I’m choosing not to go political in public because that is my husband’s job,” she said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar US.

Whether this will change when it comes to being the First Lady, we’ll have to wait and see. She has, however, stated that she wants to make an effort with anti-bullying campaigns.
