Sandra Kopp and Tilda Swinton

Chanel's front-row habitués at the Métiers d'art Paris Hamburg 2017/18 show recall their own memories of Hamburg, reveal their connection to the port city, and poeticise Karl Lagerfeld's homecoming opus at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.

“Hamburg has its own particular iodized perfume, of salt, of the sea, and you can almost taste it. The Elbphilharmonie seems perfectly adapted to this port where neon LEDS illuminate the canals and where rivers meet the ocean. The auditorium is impressive and as the clothes began to appear, it was wonderful to see how certain textures, weaves and colors recalled both the building and the Hanseatic city itself. I loved the references to the graphic geometry of the containers transported on the ships and to the red-brick color of the Gothic industrial and administrative buildings. I loved the maritime influence on the mens and women’s peacoats and the storm flap and sailor collar details on coats and jackets but they never felt nostalgic. The Elbphilarmonie is barely one year old but it already feels like a bridge betweeen the past and the future of the city.”
