Sophie Turner On The Confidence Lesson Priyanka Chopra Taught Her

“Nobody really has that much”

You wouldn’t think that lacking in confidence was an issue for Sophie Turner. With eight seasons of Game of Thrones under her belt and all the press interviews and public appearances that come with it (plus having a very famous fiancé), it would be fair to presume that the actress is as confident as they come; but that’s not always the case, she told us on the set of her May issue cover shoot.

Admitting that “nobody really has that much”, the 23-year-old revealed that she actually turned to her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Priyanka Chopra, for advice. At 36, Chopra is 13 years Turner’s senior.

“I asked her, ‘Where do you get all this confidence from?’,” Turner recalled, “and she said, ‘Well of course I’m insecure about bits and bobs, but if you want to get the reaction that you want to get, you have to walk into that room and be confident, and walk into that room and own it, and make people feel welcome and loved and happy to be there with you.'”

“So that’s what I’ve learned about confidence,” she summarised. “I think nobody really has that much, but if you own it and pretend to be that person, you’ll get a much warmer response, and so I’m trying to do that.”

The two women have been spending plenty of time together thanks to their respective romances with Jonas brothers; Chopra married Nick Jonas in December last year, while Turner is engaged to Joe Jonas. They’ve been pictured on several group outings together, and spent the Christmas holidays in the UK with Turner’s family.

As well as growing in confidence, Turner told us that she’s also trying to take more ownership over her career now that she’s bidding farewell to Sansa Stark.

“I have a big issue with standing up for myself, and just being outspoken in general,” she said. “When I was working on the most recent X-Men, Jessica Chastain came over to me – because I wouldn’t even move if there was a really dangerous light hanging above me, I thought I’d just sit there and see if they noticed – and she said, ‘Hey, you know you can say something’.

“And so then whenever I had points about a script or something, she would bring me in and say, ‘You had a really good point, why don’t you tell everyone?’, and so I’m learning to take charge of my career more and be a more independent person.”
