Since Hermès first introduced it back in 1984, the Birkin bag has become a signifier of wealth and luxury, revered for its supple leather construction and exclusivity. But while most carriers of the Birkin may feel inclined to maintain its pristine condition, the bag’s namesake, Jane Birkin, was known for her irreverent and practical approach to wearing the purse, often accessorising it or filling it to the brim. Now, Dua Lipa is following in the French icon’s footsteps.
The singer was recently spotted carrying a black, decked-out version of the Birkin while heading on to Paris on the Eurostar, where she was accompanied by boyfriend Callum Turner. She added her own flair to the bag via a patterned red, brown, and beige handkerchief tied to one end of the handle, and an array of kitschy keychains fastened to the other end. A hefty stack of papers could also be seen inside of the purse, harkening back to Jane’s own tendency to stuff hers with notebooks, binders, and other mundane detritus that fills day-to-day life.
As for the rest of Lipa’s outfit, the Grammy winner opted for a co-ordinating black ensemble, consisting of a long sleek black leather coat, a black top, and a black scarf. She finished off the look with baggy blue jeans, sneakers, and oval-shaped sunglasses.
Meanwhile, Turner looked suave in his own right as he pushed along a silver suitcase. The actor wore a black sweater underneath a dark brown collared leather jacket, as well as tapered black pants and black boots.
