Introducing Kyokujou Japanese Cuisine.
When it comes to dining out in KL, it comes down to three things: flavour, aesthetics, and ambience. Nestled in the heart of KL lies an establishment that takes you away from the bustle, transporting you to the beauty of Japanese cuisine. Kyokujou Japanese Cuisine, strategically located in the Corus Hotel, is a hidden gem that’s waiting to be explored. Those who grew up in KL, or specifically in Ampang, will recognise the hotel for its strategic landmark. However, if you ask us, its cosy atmosphere and delightful menu are what lure us to the establishment too.
Blending traditional aesthetics with modern touches, Kyokujou exudes character throughout every corner. Stepping inside the restaurant reveals an Omakase bar and private rooms with Japanese Tatami-style interiors. Led by Chef Johnny Au Yong, the mastermind behind every flavour and dish, has dedicated his career to creating dishes that leave a lasting impression. The refined menu has consistently delivered, in terms of both taste and presentation. Through every detail and more, Chef Johnny is on his way to making Kyokujou a place to spark connections, fueled by the finest Japanese cuisine.
If it’s your first time exploring Kyokujou, we recommend opting for the Omakase menu. However, their à la carte dishes are also worth adding to your wishlist. Whether you choose the Seafood (RM498) or Wagyu Beef course (RM698), trust that the dining experience will elevate your taste buds. While we were there, we indulged in a seven-course journey that focuses on their signature dishes with uniquely tailored meals to keep you coming back for more.
A Glimpse Into Kyokujou Japanese Cuisine in KL:
Our journey began with an exquisite first course, featuring a heavenly platter of fresh oysters topped with coriander, a splash of vinegar, and delicate caviar. The experience continued with the ‘Drunken Prawn’—a dish that captures the essence of indulgence—followed by the refined flavours of tuna akami paired with Japanese yam and natto bean sauce.
As we transitioned to the second course, a vibrant bowl of clam soup warmed the senses, paving the way for a striking sashimi platter. Featuring the likes of scallop, toro, shima aji, and hamachi, the melt-in-your-mouth textures were brought to life with a drizzle of white soy sauce and the brightness of fresh wasabi leaves, complemented by olive oil. With every bite, its rich yet fresh flavours made this portion of our evening an instant highlight of our adventure.
For those who chose the wagyu beef omakase option, a hearty bowl of beef stew awaited—rich and fulfilling. Meanwhile, if you opt for the seafood omakase, you will be treated to a comforting soup brimming with toro, eggplant, Japanese green chilli, white radish, and yam.
Next came the pièce de résistance: a stunning presentation of grilled white eel (for the seafood omakase choosers) and a heavenly plate of perfectly grilled A5 wagyu (the wagyu beef omakase). If you ask us, we can’t seem to pick a favourite with both dishes being another highlight of our omakase experience.
But the journey wasn’t over yet. The sixth course introduced us to an array of signature sushi selections. Depending on your omakase choice, you can find yourself savouring the otoro adorned with truffle, hamachi crowned with caviar and engawa. For those revelling in the wagyu beef course, the delight continued with wagyu sushi, lavishly topped with caviar, pan-fried onion and a whisper of truffle.
As we approached the end of this captivating dining experience, a sweet finale awaited: a delectably refreshing plate of Japanese pears. With every bite, it felt like a celebration of refined flavours. The Omakase journey was a lasting odyssey through culinary innovation. The best part? You can even dress up and choose from a range of stunning kimonos to take pictures with your loved ones. So, what are you waiting for? Get ready to embark on a gastronomical journey that captures the essence of Japan.
