Lancôme’s HAPTA Brings Assistive Beauty Technology to Malaysia

Beauty For All

In the lead-up to World Rare Disease Day and International Women’s Day, Lancôme joined forces with the Malaysian Rare Disorders Society (MRDS) for an initiative rooted in a simple yet powerful belief: beauty should be accessible to everyone.

Discover how Lancôme and MRDS are championing inclusive beauty with HAPTA, an assistive make-up device supporting independent lipstick application.

Held in Kuala Lumpur, the collaboration brought together individuals living with rare disorders, caregivers and advocates in a shared show of solidarity and visibility. More than a ceremonial partnership, it underscored a growing movement within the beauty industry—one that recognises accessibility as essential, not optional.

At the heart of the event was the introduction of HAPTA, an assistive device designed to support those with limited hand, wrist or arm mobility in applying lipstick independently. For many people with mobility impairments, the everyday ritual of applying make-up can require assistance, turning a deeply personal act into a logistical challenge. HAPTA seeks to restore that autonomy.

Developed in consultation with accessibility experts, medical professionals and members of the disability community, the device combines engineering with human-centred design. Its motion-stabilising technology is created to counter involuntary movements, helping to steady the hand during application. Using a self-levelling hinge system and real-time sensors, it adjusts intuitively as the arm bends or rotates, maintaining balance and precision.

Inside, micro-motors and smart motion sensors work together to distinguish between intentional gestures and tremors, compensating where necessary without feeling restrictive. Lightweight and ergonomically designed, HAPTA also features an adaptive strap for comfort and a universal attachment compatible with most lipstick shapes, ensuring it integrates easily into existing beauty routines.

Globally, the innovation has already received recognition for its forward-thinking design. Yet in Malaysia, its significance feels especially meaningful through Lancôme’s partnership with MRDS. As part of the collaboration, 24 HAPTA units have been contributed to members of the rare disease community, providing immediate access to adaptive beauty technology for those who may benefit most.

The event itself extended beyond a product demonstration. Through open conversations, storytelling and community engagement, it highlighted the lived realities of individuals navigating rare conditions—from healthcare access to social stigma.

Importantly, HAPTA will also be made available for purchase in Malaysia, widening access beyond the initial contribution. Whether mobility challenges arise from rare disorders, injury or age-related conditions, HAPTA represents a new category of assistive beauty innovation—one that blends luxury with inclusivity.
