Nails have had huge moments over the last 10 years, with nail art exploding in popularity at the turn of the decade as Pinterest and Instagram provided platforms to showcase it, and – in turn – inspire others. In 2012 the documentary Nailgasm explored “the recent rise of the subculture of nail art from hood fashion to high fashion”, as designs embedded in black street culture sprung up over countless catwalks and on celebrities from all walks of life. A way to express one’s individuality or humour – as well as to promote something, often in the case of fingernails belonging to the famous – nails as a creative canvas remain big business, as micro-nail art trends come and go.
