A Legacy Built on Light
When Luminous Silk first launched, the beauty landscape looked markedly different. Many foundations of the era were heavy, overly matt and prone to masking rather than enhancing the skin beneath. Armani’s approach felt refreshingly modern. Built around what the brand calls Liquid Silk Technology, the formula was engineered to scatter light as it hits the skin, creating a softly diffused, lit from within effect without obvious shimmer.
That balance of medium coverage and believable skin is precisely what has sustained its reputation for 25 years and reformulating such a product must’ve been no small decision.
The Formula, Elevated
Rather than altering the essence of Luminous Silk, Armani beauty has chosen to refine it. The new formula retains the silky texture and seamless blendability that made the original so famous, while introducing a considered edit of skincare-led ingredients.
Glycerin delivers up to 24 hours of hydration, helping the skin feel comfortable throughout the day. Niacinamide supports a more even-looking tone, while a duo of Mediterranean floral extracts—Mediterranean lily and white lupine—work to enhance radiance and a subtly plumped appearance over time. Crucially, the foundation remains suitable for all skin types and has been tested under dermatological control to be non-comedogenic. Wear has also been optimised, with the formula designed to maintain its natural glow and fresh feel for up to 24 hours.
At its core, Liquid Silk Technology still anchors the finish. The light-diffusing pigments create that recognisable Armani luminosity, smoothing the look of the complexion while preserving a weightless sensation on the skin.
The foundation now spans 20 luminous shades, including four new additions, developed with enhanced pigment precision. Ultramarine pigments have been incorporated to complement deeper skin tones and avoid any ashy cast. Green pigments have also been blended into selected medium, neutral and warm shades to better illuminate olive undertones without dullness.
The Perfect Pair: The Luminous Silk Illuminating Primer
Alongside the reformulated foundation, Armani beauty introduces the Luminous Silk Illuminating Primer, designed to compliment the signature glow even further.
This water-based gel primer is infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid and skin-refining LHA. The texture feels fresh and lightweight, also delivering 24-hour hydration while helping to smooth the surface of the skin. Used beneath foundation, it creates a subtly luminous base that amplifies the light-reflecting effect of the Luminous Silk. It can also be mixed directly with the foundation for a sheerer, more dewy finish.
Although reformulations often spark anxiety, particularly when the original has achieved near mythic status, Armani beauty’s approach feels measured. The character of Luminous Silk remains intact: medium, buildable coverage, a silky glide and a softly radiant finish that flatters all.
