L’Oréal Professionnel Metal DX Mask for Anti-Hair Breakage

Hair colouring has evolved significantly over the years, but issues like breakage and uneven results remain common, even for clients with otherwise healthy hair. These concerns have long puzzled professionals, particularly when colour or bleach services don’t perform as expected. Now, L’Oréal Professionnel has uncovered a key piece of the puzzle—and developed a solution grounded in science.

In collaboration with the University of Ioannina, L’Oréal Professionnel spent seven years researching the internal structure of the hair fibre. What they discovered was that the presence of metal particles inside the fibre plays a critical role in hair sensitivity during colouring, balayage, and bleaching services. Unlike surface residue, which can be removed easily, this internal build-up is harder to detect and can lead to inconsistent colour results and increased breakage.

To address this, L’Oréal Professionnel developed Metal DX, an advanced care protocol built around a patented molecule called glicoamine. This molecule is small enough to penetrate deep into the hair fibre, where it binds to metal particles and neutralises them. The result is a significant reduction in the reactions that typically occur between metal and oxidants during colour treatments.

The Metal DX protocol has been rigorously tested through over 100 instrumental studies and more than 1,000 real-life applications. The outcomes are clear: hair treated with Metal DX shows up to 97% less breakage, while also achieving more consistent lift and colour uptake. For hair professionals, this means a more predictable, high-performance result. For clients, it means stronger hair with vibrant, longer-lasting colour.

Understanding that metal build-up can vary from person to person — depending on water quality and hair porosity — L’Oréal Professionnel has also created a home care solution to maintain results between salon visits. The Metal DX Mask for Anti-Hair Breakage is formulated with the same glicoamine technology to continue targeting and neutralising metal inside the fibre.

This at-home mask helps preserve colour brilliance, while also providing nourishment and softness. Its creamy texture delivers hydration without weighing the hair down, making it suitable for regular use after any colour, balayage or lightening treatment. It offers both performance and comfort, making it a practical addition to any haircare routine.

Metal DX represents a new direction in colour care. By shifting the focus from surface damage to internal fibre chemistry, L’Oréal Professionnel has introduced a protocol that not only prevents visible damage but also strengthens the hair from within. The science behind it is complex, but the result is simple: healthier hair and more reliable colour results.
