If you’ve been a novice user of retinol, then you know about its sensitivity to light. Which is why you’re usually instructed to only use it in the PM and to follow up your morning routine with a sunscreen to protect the skin the morning after. However, Supergoop! are breaking this common rule with the introduction of their Daily Dose Bioretinol + Mineral Sunscreen. Infused with an intrinsic and future forward bioretinol, we speak to Sofia Gracia, vice president of product development at Supergoop! on how they achieved such a feat!
What is bioretinol and why should we not be afraid of it?
SG: Daily Dose Bioretinol is a 100% mineral sunscreen fluid that combines bakuchiol, a collagen-boosting peptide and a synergistic-blend of powerful antioxidants. The product allows for skin to look and feel bouncy, smooth and even. Most importantly, it helps both repair the visible signs of aging and protect against future damage by providing UVA, UVB, blue light and pollution protection. Unlike traditional retinols, our product is formulated with Bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol. Bakuchiol mimics the same effects as a retinol would by reducing the visible appearance of multiple signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles.
Retinol in a sunscreen, how does that work?
SG: Our Daily Dose Bioretinol is formulated to be able to be worn in daylight, even direct sun, unlike most retinols and retinoids, which are unstable in the presence of UV light – making those suitable only for nighttime use. Bakuchiol also helps protect the skin from UV-induced damage, helping boost the protective qualities of the sunscreen.
Where did the idea of including a bio-retinol into a sunscreen come from? I don’t believe there’s anything like it in the market right now.
SG: When we created our Daily Dose franchise, we set out to create game-changing formulas that people would want to wear on the skin. Daily Dose Bioretinol is a first-of-its-kind formula, combining two powerhouse anti-aging ingredients – bioretinol and SPF. Together, they work to break the cycle of skin damage by helping reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helping to prevent future damage from happening.
What were the biggest challenges faced while creating the new Daily Dose Bioretinol + Mineral Sunscreen?
SG: At Supergoop! we always want to challenge ourselves with out-of-the-box thinking and groundbreaking product innovation. Daily Dose Bioretinol is the result of years of research and ingredient-sourcing, and lots of testing (and re-testing) just like all of our other products.
Is it suitable for everyone and all skin types?
SG: Daily Dose Bioretinol is formulated for work with every skin type and tone. Perfect for the skincare beginners to the retinol pros, and everyone in between! We wanted the application to be as easy as possible, so we developed the product to feel more like a sunscreen fluid, seamlessly blending into one’s skin for a smooth finish, all while leaving no white cast.
Could you use the Daily Dose Vitamin C in tandem with this product?
SG: Yes! For a full Supergoop! SPF wardrobe, apply Daily Dose Vitamin C as your serum followed by a moisturizer. Then, apply 6-8 drops of Daily Dose Bioretinol and gently pat into skin as the last step in your skincare routine, after moisturizer. If this is the only SPF in your skincare routine, apply generously and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
Are there any concerns with paring this bio-retinol serum with other serums?
SG: Our formula is gentle enough to be used in-tandem with any prescription retinol or retinoids. However, with any products, we recommend patch testing to monitor for any skin sensitivities before incorporating into daily skincare routines.
Would you still follow up this SPF boosted serum with another SPF after?
SG: You can never have enough SPF! While we recommend 6-8 drops of Daily Dose Bioretinol as the last step in your skincare routine if this your only SPF, this formula pairs very nicely with our mineral beauty base layers, specifically Mineral Sheerscreen and Mineral Mattescreen.
