La Mer and the Salk Institute Collaborate on Bioenergetic Skin Research

When Skincare Meets Science.

In a landmark collaboration that bridges the worlds of skincare and science, La Mer has joined forces with the Salk Institute for Biological Studies to advance research into cellular energy, regeneration, and healthy ageing. This three-year partnership marks the first of its kind for the renowned research institute, and reflects La Mer’s long-standing commitment to understanding how bioenergetic science can support the skin’s natural vitality.

La Mer deepens its commitment to bioenergetic science with a new research platform and partnership with the Salk Institute.

At the heart of the collaboration lies the newly launched La Mer Healthy Ageing Fellowship, awarded to postdoctoral researcher Ankita Chadda in Professor Agnieszka Kendrick’s lab at Salk. Her work will explore how ageing affects the intricate transport systems within cells—discoveries that could shed light on new strategies for maintaining cellular health and even help address neurodegenerative conditions in the future.

“La Mer has always believed in the power of bioenergetics to enhance skin’s natural renewal,” said Sandra Main, global brand president of La Mer. “Our partnership with the Salk Institute reflects our deep commitment to advancing the science of cellular energy, ensuring that our innovations continue to push the boundaries of ageing science.”

This new partnership also coincides with the launch of La Mer’s Bioenergetics Research Platform—a comprehensive scientific initiative that expands upon the brand’s decades-long study of skin energy and renewal. Introduced through the global campaign La Mer Gives Skin Life, the platform delves into every stage of Miracle Broth™ creation, from its oceanic origin to its visible effects on the skin.

Recent research has revealed fascinating insights into the brand’s signature ingredient. Studies into the Giant Sea Kelpused to produce Miracle Broth have found that its unique microbiome plays a vital role in generating skin-beneficial nutrients such as vitamins C, E, A, and K—even before the fermentation process begins. These findings further strengthen La Mer’s position at the forefront of bioenergetic skincare innovation. At a cellular level, new in vitro studies have demonstrated that Miracle Broth not only supports energy flow throughout the day and night, but also helps to protect and replenish the skin’s natural power source, encouraging youthful regeneration and repair.
