A quick chat with Salome Das on her TikToks, Future Plans and Skincare Routine.

Hi Salome, how are you doing?

I’m doing great! I’ve been travelling all over the world, working nonstop. I haven’t thought twice, but I absolutely love it! Being constantly on the go, booked and busy is where I thrive the most. It’s the life I chose, and I’m here for it. I have fully mastered living out of a suitcase for months on end.

Where are you right now?

I’m always moving between London, Paris, Mumbai and KL. I am in London, but I’m off to Paris soon.

What has changed over four years since our last interview with you in 2019?

Wow..so much. The last time we spoke, I was just starting to get established as a model. Now, I’ve worked with my favourite brands and participated in many amazing campaigns.

At the moment, I’m transitioning into acting and singing! In fact, I’m signed to a label and have a single dropping very soon – so, stay tuned.

I just starred and sang in my first Indian movie, which will be out in 2024! Honestly, I have always wanted to be a pop star and actress, and I’m feeling blessed and excited to be doing what I love.

As a model, you travel to many exciting places. Do you have a favourite city to travel to?

I love going to Barcelona. After a long day at work, I can just pop by the beach and be close to the ocean, where I feel most at peace. Recently, I had the chance to work on a movie that brought me to Mumbai and Bhubaneswar. I absolutely fell in love with the city and its culture! The food, the atmosphere, the art, and the people were all genuinely unique. India is such a vibrant country, and I always have a wonderful time there. I can’t wait to go back!

What has been your proudest achievement?

I should probably say being in Vogue India or working on the movie I just filmed, but it was having Mick Jagger tell me my accents video was terrific and that I cracked him up!

I’ve always had a knack for imitating accents, and it’s been my go-to party trick for years. I love exploring new countries, absorbing myself in the culture and trying to replicate the local accents, so I’m glad I decided to post a video of me doing them, and it was so well received! The video went so viral that I have people coming up to me and asking me to do random accents wherever I go. (laughs) I love it!

During your 2019 interview, you mentioned being an enthusiastic diver. Have you continued with this hobby, and would you be willing to share your favourite diving destinations?

I dive every chance I can get. Diving is like a form of meditation, and when I dive, I’m always left in awe at Mother Nature’s beauty. However, choosing a favourite destination is so hard! I’ve loved every single one of my dives. The best diving spots I’ve been to are in Indonesia and Borneo; you can’t go wrong anywhere in the coral triangle!

We love your TikToks! How did you get into creating videos of yourself reviewing food and doing them in different accents?

Growing up in Malaysia (the food hub of Asia) and being half Indian, food has always been a significant part of my culture. But I realised early on that my love for food is not normal compared to the average person (laughs).

I constantly rave about dishes or new restaurants, and eating genuinely gives me such a rush of adrenaline.

The first TikTok I’ve ever created started by accident. I filmed myself eating mangosteen for my friend, who’d never seen one before, and my Indian accent came out daily whenever I was with my close friends.

I speak in four different accents, so it was natural for me. But when my mum watched it, she found it so amusing that I had to post it online – and it caught like wildfire. I couldn’t have been happier because I was doing what I love most – trying new dishes, speaking in different accents and making people laugh!

Your reviews of our delicious local cuisine make us wonder, what is your absolute favourite Malaysian dish?

That’s a tough question. I get asked this a lot, and my answer constantly changes! But right now, my top three are Nasi Kerabu, Penang Char Kway Teow and Assam Laksa (extra spicy!)

Could you share your current beauty skincare routine?

Being very minimalistic with my skin has been the most beneficial. I wash my face with the Cetaphil gentle face wash, apply The Inkey List Niacinamide serum and the Physiogel sensitive skin moisturiser.

When I don’t wear makeup, I just wash my face with water with no cleanser. Also, I found that using a balm to remove my makeup has been a game changer. I use Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm; it’s super soothing, moisturising, and doesn’t clog my pores.

What is the one skincare product you absolutely can’t live without?

Niacinamide! The day I included that in my routine, my skin changed completely.

Let’s talk about fashion. How would you describe your style?

I would say edgy, sexy and experimental! I love experimenting with clothes. For me, fashion is my form of expression, and how I look and wear changes daily, just like how I feel changes daily!

What sets me apart and makes my style unique is incorporating my culture into it – and I do that mainly with accessories. Most of my jewellery is from my village in India, and my bags are either from India or hidden places in Malaysia. Also, you’ll always find me wearing a Bindi whenever I go out. The fusion of Western and Asian styles in my outfits reflects my true identity.

Do you have a go-to fashion item that you consider an essential part of your wardrobe?

Yes. My bindi. I feel naked without it!

If you had to pick one fashion or skincare brand to collaborate with, who would it be?

I would love to collaborate with Jean Paul Gaultier. I love everything about him! He’s so eclectic – I feel it’s exactly me in a brand! That would definitely be my dream collaboration.

Lastly, Salome Das, where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I envision myself travelling the globe, sharing my music with audiences worldwide, and reaching popstar status. I also hope to have acted in both Bollywood and Hollywood films and delivered a speech about climate change at the United Nations. My ultimate goal is to inspire young people worldwide, promoting self-love, confidence, and recycling through my work. With my music and authentic self, I aim to connect with individuals worldwide.
