Time to channel the noughties.
It’s been two years since the Y2K trend was brought back to the runways with labels like Miu Miu, Blumarine and Diesel being the main players. With thrifting being a popular social activity among Gen Zs, fueled by the millennials’ nostalgia for their teenage years, the trends of the aughts have found their way back to relevance.
The name ‘Y2K’ was coined by programmer David Eddy and originally referred to a software problem that existed during the year 2000. Today, at the mention of the abbreviation, we think of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Bratz dolls, flip phones and pixelated video games.
Now that the trend has proved it is here to stay, here’s a list of items we’d recommend if you’re looking to glean the Y2K trend.
Here are the essentials to recreate the Y2K look:
Baby Tees
Versatile and flattering, the baby tee perfectly represents an era unmotivated by extravagance and glamour, but instead leaned more toward street style and experimental self-expression. If you’re looking to make a statement then opt for tees with graphics. But, you can also keep it cool and minimalistic with a plain tee. Extra points are awarded if you shop from the kids’ section.
Feathers
Nothing reflects the rebellion and boldness of the noughties like a feather-trimmed clothing item. Whether donned on a coat or your heel strap, these fuzzy additions add a playful flair to the look.
Butterfly Motifs
The butterfly motif is now a dominant theme of the Y2K aesthetic, all thanks to Mariah Carey and Salma Hayek wearing butterfly tops in the past. More recently, style icons like Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo have put their spin on the emblem—making it even more sought after.
Statement Belts
The early 2000s were the years of chaotic accessorising. Back then accessories weren’t worn for functionality, but instead to zest up your outfits. Things like chunky low-slung belts were a staple to red carpet looks 20 years ago, and now they are having a comeback.
Denim
When it comes to dressing like it’s the 2000s, one thing is certain: denims are essential. Low-rise and bootcut jeans were the key players in Y2K fashion. Opt for denim with a light wash or distressed look to nail the style. A hint of rock stud or sequin is also recommended and pairs superbly with the material.
Platform shoes
Elevate your Y2K ensemble—and height—with a pair of platform heels or flatform sandals. Not only are these perfect to combat the summer heat, but these chunky shoes offer an effortlessly chic element while not requiring much effort to slip on.
Glasses
Whether it’s sports frames that wrap around the head or tinted glasses, a pair of Y2K sunglasses will add a touch of nonchalance and coolness to any outfit. We recommend the tinted sunglasses from Acne Studios or Gentle Monster’s Ttl 02.
