Miuccia Prada is known for her love of contradiction. “[I] love everything to do with technology and the future. But at the same time, I love the past,” she said in a 2025 interview with Harper’s BAZAAR UK. It comes to no surprise that her subsidiary brand Miu Miu is leading the charge in the revival of all things vintage. Since 2020, the brand has been running the ‘Upcycled by Miu Miu’ initiative, in which limited collections of vintage garments are refashioned for the modern day.
With the ‘Making of Old’ project, she flips the script. Inverting her thesis topic, she drills down on what makes vintage aesthetics so compelling: visible effects of the passing of time. Here, she showcases the layered techniques in sourcing, sanding, washing, and brushing leather to achieve that instantly-recognisable aged patina. A masterclass in leather treatment and craftsmanship, this effect finds its way onto Miu Miu’s loafers, Chelsea, lace-up and buckle boots, the Arcadie, Pocket and Wander bags, aviator and bomber jackets, and more.
