Brands like Dolce & Gabbana, H&M and Uniqlo recently made headlines for designing luxury garments for Muslim women. This step towards inclusion of the Muslim community has been praised by many, but Pierre Bergé, the former business partner of Yves Saint Laurent, has a much different opinion on the movement.
“Designers are there to make women more beautiful, to give them their freedom, not to collaborate with this dictatorship which imposes this abominable thing by which we hide women and make them live a hidden life,” he told French radio station Europe 1, The Guardian reports. “These creators who are taking part in the enslavement of women should ask themselves some questions.”
Dolce & Gabbana launched their line of lace and floral hijabs and abayas in January 2016. But Bergé believes their motive is only money: “These creators who are taking part in the enslavement of women should ask themselves some questions. Renounce the money and have some principles.”
