How To Style Your Pencil Skirt: 10 New Ideas

The pencil skirt is back in a big way this season, via Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Erdem and Calvin Klein. Cast aside any aspersions you might have about them feeling dated; for spring/summer 2018, it's less about the va va voom Marilyn Monroe version that was designed to wiggle around in and more about cocooning a woman's shape. They are fitted, but not skin-tight. They also come in materials not associated with their corporate reputation - think knits and vinyls. To avoid looking too office-bound, choose a shade in a bright colour, or choose a heavily embellished style - the more feathers and sequins the better. If you truly want to bring your pencil skirt forward, then ditch towering heels, bid adieu to platform court shoes and swap for a strappy modest heel instead, or if you're feeling bold, socks and shoes - much more modern, and a lot more comfortable.

A statement pencil skirt is a great addition to any wardrobe, and keeps this style from looking too corporate. They can be dressed up or down, but we prefer opting for simplicity – wear with a casual T-shirt and a pair of understated heels.

Diane von Furstenberg is a go-to when it comes to pencil skirts. Known for her use of colour, print and flattering cuts, hers are an investment you won’t regret. Those who appreciate a more understated look should pair with a simple T-shirt, alternatively clash prints for a playful edge.
