What would Thomas Burberry say if he were to watch this three minute biopic? Alright, we don’t know what he might say but we can tell you to expect.
Celebrating the English fashion label’s 160th anniversary, Chief Creative and CEO Christopher Bailey has decided to tell the story of the man behind the trench coat. Starring Domhnall Gleeson as Thomas Burberry, and Sienna Miller as his first love who went on to become his wife, the short film is a dazzling tale of the First World War, ambition and love. Lily James, the face of My Burberry fragrances plays the role of Burberry’s mistress and female pilot, who is inspired by the record-breaking achievements of Betty Kirby-Green when she flew roundtrip from England to Cape Town in 45 hours. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadiain, it was shot primarily at the Shirburn Castle in Oxfordshire, where trenches were recreated.
Outfitting more than half a million solders during the war and several polar explorers during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, such as Sir Ernest Shackleton played by Dominic West, the iconic trench coat is made of an innovative fabric which is both lightweight and waterproof. An invention of Thomas Burberry’s, the gabardine fabric is tightly woven from wool and cotton; the original trench coat designs were later patented in 1912.
