And, the crown goes to
London delivered—and it delivered magnificently. On the evening of 22 February, the gilded world of cinema descended upon the Royal Festival Hall on the banks of the Thames, where the 79th EE BAFTA Film Awards unfolded with all the drama, elegance and jaw-dropping surprises. Hosted by the effervescent Alan Cumming_who proved once again that wit is the most flattering thing one can wear to a ceremony—the night belonged, above all, to Paul Thomas Anderson’s brooding political thriller One Battle After Another, which swept the room with six wins, including Best Film and Best Director. But the evening was far from a one-picture affair.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners made history, becoming the most-awarded film from a Black director in BAFTA’s storied history, while the spellbinding Hamnet, helmed by Chloé Zhao, claimed Outstanding British Film alongside a luminous Best Actress win for the incomparable Jessie Buckley. And then there was the night’s most electrifying moment—the audible gasps that rippled through the hall when Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein dominated in costume, production design and make-up.
