Madeleine Shaw On How to Eat Well When You Travel

Madeleine Shaw Brown's Hotel

Madeleine Shaw has just launched a healthy-eating menu at Brown’s Hotel in London, meaning that guests will be able to start the day with one of her vitamin-packed fruit smoothies or finish it off with a Shaw-approved quinoa burger. She believes this is something that has been missing in the luxury travel market for some time.

“I think you are so spoilt when you are home because you have those places that you know, but when you are travelling and staying in hotels, you inevitably just end up grabbing a club sandwich. A lot more people are choosing to make eating healthily a big part of their lives, so I think it’s important for them to have this option.”

If your business trip doesn’t happen to take you to the new healthy offerings at Brown’s, however, Shaw gave us a few tips on how to stick to your routine when you’re on the move.

“Preparation and organisation is key. Take some healthy snacks with you – like nuts and seeds – do a little research beforehand on where to go and then navigate the menu well, choosing sensible things like eggs or veggies. Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to be perfect all of the time.”

Shaw also gave some words of advice on not beating yourself up when an inevitable slip-up occurs:

“One piece of cake is not going to make any difference to your waistline or to your skin. Beating yourself up is almost worse than slipping up in the first place – you need to switch up that mentality. Enjoy your little cheat and then just try to be healthy at your next meal.”

And being healthy does not necessarily mean cutting out everything you love. When asked about the big gluten and dairy debate, Shaw says she would not recommend that everybody cut these out of their diet.

“I don’t think gluten or dairy are the enemy; it’s all about the quality of what you’re eating. For example, are you eating organic dairy and wholegrain bread? While I do think that for some people, cutting these things out can help their skin and digestive systems, it’s not necessary for everyone. However, one of main reasons I would advocate this is because a lot of these foods are highly processed, so when you cut out gluten, you inevitably also cut out a lot of rubbish.”

Madeleine Shaw’s menu is available at HIX Mayfair and in the English Tea Room, the Donovan Bar and for room service at Brown’s Hotel now.
