Here’s for those who wanted a recap
After months of feuding, Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber have finally resolved their intense TikTok drama. The fan-fuelled drama circled the internet for months causing a riff between the actress and model. However, last Friday, both A-listers took to Instagram to urge fans to halt the hate and negativity and move on.
Everything you need to know about the feud between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber:
Was there a history between the women?
Truthfully, the drama between Gomez and Bieber has been happening ever since their association with Gomez’s past lover and Bieber’s husband, Justin Bieber. Although they have denied the rumours of bad blood, their history have always been of interest to the fans.
In October 2022, Gomez and Hailey caused internet commotion after being photographed hugging at the Academy Museum Gala, showcasing that they were friendly. The moment comes in the wake of Hailey’s statements addressing the years-long fan speculation of an alleged feud between herself and Selena over their relationships with Justin Bieber. During her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast in September 2022, the model assured that despite fans’ assumptions, she never dated the singer at the same time as Selena.
While the Biebers and Gomez have tried to quell rumours for years, the drama between them still resurfaces here and there.
When did the feud begin?
It began on 22 February when actress Selena Gomez posted a comedic TikTok on how she accidentally over-laminated her eyebrows. Hours later, Hailey Bieber – the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin and niece of Alec Baldwin – posted a screenshot of herself FaceTiming her good friend Kylie Jenner with a close-up photo of their eyebrows insinuating that they were taking a jab against Gomez.
The next day, Jenner and Gomez responded to all the comments stating that there was no feud between them, that the on-going rumours about it were ‘unnecessary’ and that Gomez is a fan of Jenner.
Following the drama, Gomez gained more than 20 million Instagram followers on 22 February. That day, she overtook Kylie Jenner to become the most-followed woman on Instagram with 380 million followers, but Gomez’s followers have increased to 405 million as of 28 March. She became the first woman to pass 400 million followers on March 18. Meanwhile, Jenner and Bieber have each lost at least hundreds of thousands of followers in the weeks following the drama.
What happened next?
The same day, fans posted a TikTok video of Hailey Bieber reenacting a gag when Taylor Swift – Gomez’s best friend – was mentioned, ultimately, initiating the feud even more. Gomez even commented on the video stating that Swift was “one of the best in the game”.
Then out of nowhere, Gomez announced that she was taking a break from social media making the feud rumours disseminate even more. But, amid the drama, Gomez’s beauty brand, Rare Beauty, spiked up in Google searches and TikTok – putting her directly under the spotlight.
Why did the drama continue?
Fans then started looking for more faults, such as accusing Bieber of shading Gomez in an Instagram Story. They believed that Bieber used the song “Calm Down” by Rema without Gomez’s vocals to imply that the feud was real.
Then, Justin Bieber fans thought he looked unhappy with his wife in Instagram photos from his birthday. Thus, making fans theorise even more about the drama between the two women.
How did the feud end?
On 24 March, Gomez posted an Instagram Story revealing that Bieber had reached out to her about the death threats she was receiving because of the fan-fuelled drama. Gomez even stated: “I’ve always advocated for kindness and want this all to stop.” After that, Bieber thanked Gomez for calling an end to the drama.
However, this isn’t the first time Gomez came to Bieber’s defence and asking fans to stop scrutinising her.
