Apple TV+’s crime-thriller miniseries The Crowded Room is here—and the performances are intense.

Based on the true story of Billy Milligan, who was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, the new psychological thriller from filmmaker Akiva Goldsman centers on the Milligan-inspired Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland) and his pivotal arrest after his involvement in a shooting at Rockefeller Center during the summer of 1979.

Following the tragic incident, the narrative of Danny’s life is disclosed through a series of interviews conducted by Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried), which piece together the dark timeline of events leading up to the ultimate crime. Through the lens of his past, Danny reckons with the pivotal experiences in his life (many involving his mother, Candy, played by Emmy Rossum) and deep warfare within himself, leading to a transformative revelation.

With the show’s psychologically heavy premise, Holland’s work on his starring performance was reportedly a rewarding challenge, but one so intense it led to “a bit of a meltdown,” he told Entertainment Weekly in March—and also him taking a yearlong hiatus from acting.

“It was a tough time, for sure,” Holland said to Extra of filming some of the “brutal” scenes. “We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before.” He added, “The show did break me. There did come a time where I needed a break and disappeared and went to Mexico for a week and had time on a beach and laid low. I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was. I am excited to see how it turns out. I feel like our hard work wasn’t in vain.”
