One Michelin Key hotel, the RuMa Hotel & Residences, whispers bygones, contemporaries and comfort with a thoughtful, humble abode.
A place where love and memories are created, home is often a feeling, but at the RuMa Hotel & Residences, home is a place. Greeted by intricately beautiful kampung house pillars—reclaimed from an old home in Malacca—the One Michelin Key hotel embodies thoughtfulness, history, and uniqueness, extending to every nook and cranny of the humble abode. Not far from the capital city of Malaysia, the hotel features not only strong modernist and traditional architectural elements but also offers formidable views to take in.
A Love Letter to Our Roots
Named “RuMa”, the Malay translation for the word “home”, the hotel is steeped in rich history—the tin mining days of yore. Bringing a peaceful local touch, the hotel welcomes us with an antechamber at the entrance known as the “Bird Cage”, inspired by the cages that housed canaries used to detect air toxicity in mines. Amplifying the locality theme of the tin mining era, the hotel welcomes visitors with a stately, grand staircase that whispers of bygone grandeur—a mimic of colonial residences built by the British. But what stole the spotlight is the 6-foot golden sculpture dressed in a golden kebaya—a traditional Malay garment—designed by a Malaysian designer, Bernard Chandran, staged front and centre in the middle of the staircase.

Dancing with the copper ceiling that adorns the lobby, the earthy accents, furnishings and designs make a wonderful first impression. Promising a traditional and tranquil experience, the hotel tells an authentic, visual story of Malaysia with wooden carvings, antique balusters, wooden Peranakan cabinets, Batik print blocks and rubber tree bonsai dotted around the hotel. Even the century tiles used across the lobby reflect a riveting story about Chinese immigrants who arrived in Kuala Lumpur to work in the tin mining industry. Thriving on these histories, the RuMa Hotel & Residences created a home full of roots and an unhurried ambience—a place to ground yourself when you’re away from home.

Anchored in Provisions
Just a mere prologue to the story, the imprint of past generations isn’t the only striking thing about the hotel. Tucked away on different floors—the bar, the restaurant and the library have become destinations unto themselves. Allocated with dishes you can’t miss, the menu at RuMa Hotels & Residences extends from a gin cocktail served with orange marmalade, bitter orange and orange twist to a hearty, angus striploin with curried potato pavé.
At ATAS Modern Malaysian Eatery—the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant—servings of Sunday brunches, course options and breakfast galore echo a wondrous landscape of palette. Graced with art from Ahmad Shukri Mohamed and rubber tree Bonsai, the restaurant is a culinary tribute to Malaysia’s rich heritage and contemporary cuisines.

Nibblers can indulge in an afternoon tea at The LIBRARI, where scones with clotted cream and kaya merge with beef wellington. Presented in a handcrafted congkak stand, here lies a place for appeasing your sweet cravings and warm conversations. At dusk, you can pander to SEVEN Lobby Bar for a smorgasbord of cocktails and mocktails—perfect for a drink and unhurried conversations.
To slow down, SANTAI Pool Bar and lounge sets the stage for decanter cocktails and indulgent platters of food. Illuminated by the starry night sky and panoramic view of the city skyline, this is the place to devour a slew of food and fare: crab meat fried rice, a handcrafted pizza and an angus striploin.
Humble Abode
Across the hotel, there are individually styled suites that host an extraordinary collection of antiques, found objects, and modern utilities. Decorated with something old to give a room depth, muted tones and warm woods, each humble abode is flooded with contrasting hues—dim and natural lighting—that somehow all work. Attached with sweeping views of the Petronas Twin Towers, the rooms were flush with age-old and contemporary beauties— a contradiction that looks magnificent to the eye of the beholder.

With an airy lounge and a deep soaking tub, guests can indulge in a quiet loll when needed. Encouraging further repose, the suites at the hotel are bedecked with fully equipped kitchenettes for uncomplicated noshes and nibbles. But the star of the show is the sumptuous 330-thread count Egyptian cotton bed that makes you feel like you’re up in the clouds.
A Wellness Wonderland
The UR Spa was another major draw, covering everything from traditional Malay massages—inspired by local indigenous techniques from the tribes of Northern Borneo—and skin remedies that merge modern sciences and ancient healing. Genderless and promising, their bespoke treatments and ingredients go from 30-minute express care to a whole-day ritual.

All-in-all, the RuMa Hotel & Residences offers a slice of tranquil paradise and a glimpse of Malaysia’s soul. More than just a place to rest, it’s a destination that invites you to slow down, savour the moment and reconnect with what matters. Whether you’re drawn to the artistry of ATAS, the intimate corners of The LIBRARI, or the quiet luxury of suites adorned with both history and modernity, every element whispers the same invitation: to feel at home, even when you’re far from it.
