Face Mapping: Can You Read Your Skin?

If you’ve ever wondered what could be causing random breakouts, areas of puffiness or stubborn shadows on the skin, it might be worth looking into the ancient art of face mapping.

Essentially facial reflexology, like the feet and hands, areas of the face can give us information about what’s going on inside the body.

Nichola Joss, celebrity facialist to the likes of Meghan Markle and Decléor’s skincare expert, tells Bazaar that the concept of face mapping “allows us to target areas of concern associated with the body” – and it’s backed by science. “There are studies that have proven the body is completely connected on all levels and this is seen in the face,” she explains.

So, what’s involved in a treatment? Pros like Joss work on the pressure points and reflexology points of the face along with lymph drainage, “to address what’s going on with the body as well as help reduce congestion in the face, puffiness and tension”.

As you can see from the annotated image, the forehead area relates to stress, the central area of the face is considered the digestive zone, while the chin and jaw is hormonally-linked. That explains that predictable monthly outbreak, then.

While some spots of bother might be obvious to you, others may only be seen by a professional who can share at-home treatment tips. Joss recommends a regular (if not daily) home massage routine targeting areas as advised by your facialist, “to address specific concerns for your skin”.
