As one of the most photographed women in the world, the Duchess of Sussex has high expectations (perhaps unfairly) enforced upon her when it comes to her style – and yet, she almost always seems to get it right. This is because Meghan has an astute ability to find the line between being relatable and stylish, says Elizabeth Von Der Goltz, Net-a-Porter’s global buying director, who explains that the retailer always sees a rise in sales when the duchess wears a style that they carry.
“Meghan’s style is the perfect mix of being relatable to the everyday woman but still with a fashion point of view,” she told us. “The pieces she wears are very in line with how women are looking to dress, which makes her a great style reference.”
As well as being aspirational with her style, Von Der Goltz says that Meghan is also inspirational, thanks to the designers she chooses to support; often putting strong women and ethical labels at the forefront of her wardrobe.
“She’s conscientious about the brands she selects and loves to wear pieces from designers who put women front and centre and who also inspire and empower women, for example Claire Waight Keller at Givenchy, Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham.”
Of course, all of this ensures that Meghan is incredibly influential, stylishly speaking, something which is clearly noticeable for the retailer.
“We always see a rise in our sales whenever Meghan wears a brand we stock. For example, our Castañer espadrilles, Veja sneakers and Aquazurra Deneuve pumps, which have all seen huge sale lifts since she’s worn them. Meghan also adds a point of difference in the way she accessorises, such as carrying a Gabriela Hearst bag, an iconic and recognisable style.”
And, when it comes to her winning maternity looks, Von Der Goltz says that this success is rooted in the duchess sticking to what she has already done so well.
“I love how she hasn’t changed her style too much during pregnancy and how she’s stayed true to her aesthetic and go-to brands. My favourite recent look was when she wore the blue maxi Caroline Herrera dress on her trip to Morocco. She looked absolutely stunning and it’s a brand which she often comes back to.”
Proof if needed that the Meghan effect shows no sign of diminishing anytime soon.
