Pre-owned Wedding Dresses Are Growing In Popularity As Brides Support Sustainability

Sustainability is the word of the moment in fashion with consumers and brands taking action to lessen their environmental impact. And now, the movement appears to be entering the bridal fashion market, with Lyst noting the huge increased interest in pre-owned wedding dresses in its 2019 report.

To compile the data, the global fashion search engine analysed the online shopping behaviour of more than five million people a month, who were searching, browsing and buying fashion across 12,000 designers and stores online. The report also factors in social media metrics, including account influencer and brand followings, multi-platform mentions of products, hashtags and related keywords.

The results proved that the sustainable bride is on the rise with views on pre-owned wedding dresses up by 93 per cent year on year. In addition to this, the keywords ‘vintage’ and ‘second hand’ saw a combined increase of 42 per cent since the 2018 report.

While it is not surprising that shoppers are opting to embrace second-hand clothing in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint, the fact that brides appear to be embracing this concept on their big day certainly feels like something new. And this coincides with Pinterest’s 2019 report on wedding trends, which noted that the search for ‘sustainable wedding ideas’ was up by 181 per cent.

Other notable fashion trends that were picked up in Lyst’s report included a rise in men’s engagement rings (in which searches have risen 66 per cent year on year), dresses with pockets (up 83 per cent in just six months), statement headpieces (up 94 per cent since January) and the colour ‘hot pink’, which seems to be a direct reaction to the pink Molly Goddard dress seen on Killing Eve last year, with searches for the colour up 45 per cent and for the brand up 24 per cent since the show aired.

Another key bridal trend that is mentioned in the report (and is in complete contrast to the sustainable angle) is the rise in women opting for two dresses on their big day. The report claims that 23 per cent of brides on Lyst will choose to have two bridal gowns.
