- Prada debuts its spring 2020 campaign, featuring Frank Ocean.
- He is joined by actor Austin Butler and director Nicolas Winding Refn.
Frank Ocean is solidifying his status as a style icon. The Grammy Award winner has been enlisted by Prada for its spring 2020 ad campaign, highlighting a collection that references street culture and the way it has taken over all forms of media.
From the loose-fitting hooded parkas in bold, color-blocked hues; to jackets that featured prints of boom boxes, cassette tapes, and portable camcorders; to layered khakis paired with combat boots, designer Miuccia Prada is embracing the urban streetwear craze that has not only dominated the menswear industry for many seasons but media in general. And who better to represent all that than a creative who has his hands in music, art, photography, and, clearly, fashion.
This also isn’t the first time Ocean has rubbed elbows with the storied Italian label. He attended the spring 2020 menswear show in Shanghai and wore a Prada jacket to last year’s Met Gala. And with this campaign, he is forming a stronger partnership that is visualized in a short video.
In it, Ocean styles pieces according to his own predilections, wearing pared-down versions of the khaki suit and coat-and-bolo-tie looks that were seen on the runway. He also interprets Prada into an acronym: programming rhythms and dancing again.
Joining him on the campaign are Austin Butler, who had a supporting role in Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, and director Nicolas Winding Refn. They, like Ocean, created their own acronyms for Prada.
