Have You Seen Balenciaga’s $925 Towel Skirt?

Balenciaga has made waves once again with one of their most bizarre pieces yet: A towel skirt selling at $925.

The skirt is quite simply a towel made from terry cotton, fastened with two buttons at the waistline and an adjustable belt. The dry clean-only piece was unveiled recently as a part of Balenciaga’s Spring 2024 collection, and needless to say, it has left people bemused.

For a Maison that prominently pioneered the world of couture wear under the direction of its founder Cristobal Balenciaga, its venture into the creation of these pieces poses an evident evolution in the brand’s history. The visions of the current creative director Demna, who took on the role in 2015, have sparked controversy and conversation, leading people to question the meaning behind fashion and Balenciaga’s place in the industry.

While other designers have created pieces centred around towel designs, including Fendi for their Spring/ Summer 2020 collection and Miu Miu back in 2017, Balenciaga has cultivated a reputation that precedes them for making viral, unusual pieces over the years, hence stirring a bigger discussion.

Aside from the towel skirt, here is a round-up of some of Balenciaga’s oddest designs :

The big question is, were these pieces intentionally crafted to pose a satiric take on fashion, perhaps a way of making headlines and falling into the category of meme-worthy viral trends, or are they a lens for Balenciaga’s attempt to reimagine and steer fashion into another direction?
