L’Occitane en Provence and their Commitment to Sustainability with Plastic Odyssey

Nestled along the shimmering waters of the Malacca Strait, Penang has long been a beacon of sustainability in Malaysia. As one of the nation’s leading green state, it has consistently taken bold steps to protect its natural beauty, from pioneering plastic reduction initiatives to championing ocean conservation. With its deep-rooted commitment to environmental preservation, it comes as no surprise that Penang was chosen as the Malaysian stopover for Plastic Odyssey—a global expedition dedicated to combating plastic pollution at its source.

As one of the key sponsors of this transformative voyage, L’Occitane en Provence invited us aboard the Plastic Odyssey ship to witness firsthand the innovations and initiatives that are shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future. More than just a vessel, Plastic Odyssey serves as a floating laboratory, traveling across continents to uncover solutions for plastic waste management and empower local communities with sustainable alternatives.

Plastic Odyssey is not just about cleaning up the ocean—it is about addressing the root cause of the crisis. With the mission “To Fight Against Plastic Pollution at Sea, We Must Act Ashore,” the expedition focuses on educating and equipping communities with low-tech, accessible recycling solutions. Since its launch, the ship has navigated through various regions, making strategic stops to share best practices, offer hands-on training, and collaborate with social entrepreneurs dedicated to advancing the circular economy.

In Penang, the initiative took on new significance. With Malaysia producing a staggering 14.26 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, and an estimated 73,098 metric tonnes ending up in the ocean each year, the need for immediate action is clear. The Plastic Odyssey crew, alongside L’Occitane en Provence, engaged with local stakeholders, shedding light on how small yet consistent efforts can lead to impactful change.

L’Occitane en Provence has long been synonymous with eco-conscious beauty. Beyond its natural and ethically sourced formulations, the brand has made sustainability a core pillar of its operations. In Malaysia, its Big Little Things (BLT) Recycling Program has made significant strides since its inception in 2019, collecting over 4.9 million beauty empties and diverting 260 metric tonnes of waste from landfills.

The brand’s partnership with Plastic Odyssey is an extension of its global commitment to reducing environmental impact. “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Through initiatives like Plastic Odyssey and our BLT program, we are working towards a circular economy where waste is minimised and resources are repurposed,” said Elida Wong, General Manager of L’Occitane SEA & India.
