Pat McGrath Labs Launches Foundation In 36 Shades

Until now, base products have been noticeably missing from Pat McGrath’s highly acclaimed beauty brand.

After an apparent “25 years in the making”, this week the British make-up artist launches the ultimate trio of three complexion products into Pat McGrath Labs.

Meet ‘Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection: The System’, made up of one universal primer, 36 shades of foundation across five levels (Light, Light Medium, Medium, Medium Deep, Deep) and five setting powders. Think: “prime, perfect and set for buildable coverage in a satin finish,” explains the woman affectionately known by the beauty industry as ‘the mother of make-up’.

Since Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty shook the cosmetics counters with a debut 40 foundation shades in 2017 (now increased to 50), shade-inclusivity has been debated – and demanded – across the board.

Hero brands like MAC, Lancome and Maybelline are also leading the way, and naturally McGrath’s vast experience of making up a whole multitude of faces makes her an authority in shade matching. Every runway she works on will expose her to a unique complexion spectrum in itself.

Speaking to Bustle, she said, “As a make-up artist, we know the real amount of shades that we need when we’re doing 250 girls of all nationalities, this is the number. This is the full amount of colours I would have in my kit if I was going to cover the world.”

Indeed, all her new products are runway and red carpet tested by McGrath and her team, meaning the eagle eyed amongst us will have seen the results on the likes of Irina Shayk at London Fashion Week and Cardi B at this year’s Met Gala. Let’s hope it covers all bases for our complexions, too.
