Diving Deep Into the World of TAKAMI

Get ready to fall in love with TAKAMI

When shopping for skincare, it can be easy to fall into an endless void. While there are a myriad of options to explore, one that stuck out to us is Japanese skincare.

In a world where the pursuit of the perfect skincare regime can often feel overwhelming, Takami offers a refreshing approach. It’s not about a complicated 12-step routine but about getting the basic steps right to curate a perfect skincare routine.

You may have heard the quote “achieving the perfect glow”, but the million-dollar question still stands – how can I achieve it?

What’s Takami?

Introducing Takami. Established in 1999, the Japanese skincare brand Takami began its journey as a medical aesthetics beauty clinic in Omotesando, Tokyo. As simple as that, Takami relies on the concept of ‘Kakushitsu Dou’ (stratum corneum), which, in simpler terms, means understanding and addressing skin concerns from within.

The meaning behind Kakushitsu

Takami boasts of nurturing the delicate 0.02mm Kakushitsu—the epidermis—to regulate skin metabolism and achieve natural skin rejuvenation.

Founder Dr. Hiroshi Takami believes that maintaining the health of your Kakushitsu is crucial to knowing what your skin craves in the first place. With innovation comes a skincare product that has evolved into Takami’s most established product—the “Skinpeel Essence.”

This essence, formulated with 13 ingredients and 7 keratin complexes, provides proliferation, differentiation, desquamation, and hydration to the skin, effectively managing issues like acne, pores, and dryness.

During our recent trip to Japan in March 2024, we delved deep into Takami’s world and what it has to offer. The distinct blue and white signature colours splashed into our journey as we unravelled the science and benefits of its iconic Skinpeel Essence. Together with BAZAAR, we have Malaysian actor and content creator Sharifah Rose to embark on the TAKAMI journey.

Our visit to the Takami Kakushitsu Centre in Tokyo, Japan, was an eye-opening experience. We had the privilege of learning from four expert committees, including Associate Professor Mariko Moriyama and L’Oreal Research & Innovation experts Anne Potter, Frederic Flament, and Itaru Suzuki. Their deep dive into the kakushitsu and how to nurture its natural metabolism left us feeling confident in the product’s development and the hands of true skincare experts.

The importance of nurturing our Kakushitsu

Dr. Takami personally oversaw the development of the Skinpeel prototype by testing his groundbreaking product on 100 people per day over a 10-day research period. He describes this as a “step 0” skincare product. What’s remarkable is that it complements your existing skincare routine without disrupting it, serving as an additional layer to your regimen.

His passion lies in helping people throughout their skincare journey, especially those struggling with acne. He recognised the limitations of traditional acne treatments and was inspired to develop innovative, non-invasive solutions. His dedication and these treatments aim to improve the skin’s appearance while preserving its overall health for those dealing with persistent acne.

Dr. Takami’s research highlighted the significance of revitalising the skin’s ability to metabolise within its most active tissue. Maintaining healthy keratin levels is crucial for this process. When the skin has an abundance of keratin, it gains the resilience to shield itself from external factors, effectively managing issues like acne, pores, and dryness.

He came to understand the significance of nurturing the 0.02mm stratum corneum, as it directly contributes to maintaining healthy skin. Using the powerful Soft Peeling method, he developed a non-invasive and stress-free treatment that promotes skin cell turnover, enhances treatment penetration, and improves skin texture and quality. This helps to prevent recurring acne, reduce acne redness and scars, minimise sebum production, and treat irritating pores.

How you can introduce the SKINPEEL ESSENCE to your routine

What we learned during our time at the Kakushitsu Centre is that the best way to nurture the skin is to enforce a frictionless ritual, a gentle and non-abrasive application process.

The best way to introduce the Skinpeel essence into your routine is to apply it immediately to the skin after washing your face. Warm up the product first and tap it into the skin rather than lathering it all over so it penetrates fully. This ensures instant penetration into your kakushitsu.

While it’s safe to use daily, go ahead and slowly introduce the gentle essence to your skin every alternate day or twice a week. Once you’re comfortable with it, then go ahead and use daily.
