These Are The 10 Words The Fashion World Has Used The Most In 2017

The political climate has been a guiding force for the fashion industry in 2017, with the top three most-used words all linked to the recent rise of activism and engagement in domestic and international affairs.

‘Power’, ‘woke’ and ‘statement’ were named the top most frequently used terms adopted by the fashion world in 2017, followed by the perhaps more commonplace ‘floral’ and ‘millennial’. The word ‘ugly’ also featured in the top 10, perhaps reflecting the industry’s current affinity for items traditionally thought of as visually unappealing (think Crocs, Ugg boots and bumbags).

Global fashion search engine Lyst analysed text from over 30,000 articles written over the course of 2017, across 100 different online fashion and lifestyle publications. The articles were broken down into their 8,610,630 component words, from which Lyst counted up the most frequently occurring combinations, and used sentiment analysis modelling to build a scale of the most important words of the year.
