Alexa Chung has been a regular on the London Fashion Week front rows for over a decade, but this season, she has swapped her seat for spot backstage. The fashion maven – who launched her namesake label in 2017 – appeared on the London Fashion Week schedule for the very first time this morning, showing the Alexachung spring/summer 2019 collection to a very starry crowd.
This is of course not the first time that Chung has hosted a catwalk show for her brand. In May 2017, she launched the label with a star-studded show at the Danish Church near Regents Park in London, and she has also put on a number of guerilla-style events to promote new collections. However, this marks the very first time Chung has taken her bow as an official London Fashion Week designer.
This season’s collection was inspired by what people wear in transit, with Chung referencing an array of destinations, “from Inverness to Tokyo, Dublin to Athens and Bristol to Palma”, her show notes explained. This was interpreted into post cards printed onto slogan T-shirts and sweaters and with the logo of her fictitious travel company ‘AC World Travel Inc’.
As well as aviation-inspired jumpsuits, a new fit of jeans for the brand and a rain mac in celebration of a truly British summer, there was some striking tailoring and some beautiful beach-inspired wear.
The designer, herself, wore jeans and a polka-dot shirt over one of the printed tees as she chatted backstage to press ahead of the big reveal. She later changed into a white shirt and a polka-dot skirt as she took her bow.
And of course, there were plenty of famous faces there to lend their support to the designer, including Pixie Geldof, Daisy Lowe, Laura Jackson, Pandora Sykes and a surprising appearance from actor and comedian, Steve Coogan.
Alexachung’s presence at LFW is not the only major addition to the schedule this season. Victoria Beckham will tomorrow host her 10-year anniversary show in the city, a first for her brand, which usually shows in New York. As well as this, we will see Riccardo Tisci’s highly anticipated debut at Burberry on Monday evening.
If this show was anything to go by, we have an exciting few days ahead.
