Argos Is ‘Flattered’ Balenciaga Has Taken Inspiration From Its Car Mat

Balenciaga/Argos

Since Demna Gvasalia took the reins at Balenciaga, he’s transformed everyday objects into desirable luxury items, from Ikea-style shopper bags to the ever-divisive Crocs.

However, the latest unlikely brand to have been given a high-end makeover is Argos, after the storied French label created a leather skirt that looks to have been inspired by the catalogue retailer’s durable car mats, complete with the item’s signature grooves originally designed to capture any dirt or water.

While the homage remains unconfirmed by Gvasalia, the two items do bear an uncanny resemblance. Argos has since released a short statement, saying the company is “flattered” by the comparisons.

“It’s fabulous to see such a well-respected fashion brand taking inspiration from the everyday car mat and we’re flattered that the skirt bears a close resemblance to our Cosmos Duro All Weather Car Mat,” an Argos spokesperson told Dazed.

So if you can’t stretch to Balenciaga’s £1,795 version, turn to Argos and its £14.99 original instead.
