Support & Motivation
Creative expression appears to run in the family. “My family are very artistic people,” says Athina. “Both my brothers sing very well. My older brother used to sing jazz—beautifully might I add—and my younger brother is currently the lead singer of his band, Midnight Fusic. We are all very musically inclined and what helped us the most was the support presented by my parents growing up. They were firm believers of doing everything you love in the life you have. They cheered us on from the sidelines every single time and I have them to thank for always believing in the finer things in life.” In fact, it was her parents who advised Athina to further her studies in her chosen art form, resulting in a diploma in Dance from Lasalle School of the Arts, Singapore.
The Language Of Dance
Naturally, when Athina first embarked on her journey as a content creator, dance became the entry point as she shared clips of performances and studio sessions on her social media platforms. “I feel like dance is an art form that beautifully narrates moments without words,” she says, sharing her thoughts on the discipline. “The depth of the art is strongly held between the performer and the audience and it creates an ample amount of understanding which challenges music and movements.” Athina’s content repertoire eventually expanded to fashion and beauty—her enviable set of hair and plump skin becoming a character on their own—in addition to candid moments with family, friends or by herself, becoming the building blocks to her personal brand, one that is now known for its authentic expression and representation.
Having just celebrated her 26th birthday late last September, Athina Kamarudin opens up to BAZAAR about her evolution, rekindling her love for dance, and the secret to keeping a great set of hair.
