Balenciaga’s New Tote Takes Inspiration From Ikea’s Shopper Bag

Carry Shopper L, Balenciaga, from Spring/Summer ’17 Menswear

Balenciaga  releases a GBP1,365 men’s tote bag that bears similarities to an Ikea bag that sells for a pinch of the brand’s offer. This is not the first time that Balenciaga has recreated a high-street staple piece (Remember the Thai laundry bag inspiration?), as the brand was inspired by the exterior: from the dual straps to Ikea’s signature blue and the structure of the carry-on.

The bag is reported to have additional features (of course), with a gold-stamped logo at the top, a zip pocket, lined with black fabric, while the exterior fabric is replaced with “blue wrinkled glazed leather”. According to Independent UK, an Ikea spokesperson in the US, says, “We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag.” Although the novelty of the product does not quite live up to expectations, high-end fashion brands seem to be taking great inspirations from everyday clothing and accessories.
