Giambattista Valli

Let them eat cake—or in Giambattista Valli’s case—wear it. The king of couture confections was at it again this season, but this time, he drifted ever so slightly away from his infamous tulle poufs, ruffs, and puffs. Slimmer silhouettes were on the menu at Valli this season, and his more recent study of drapery continued from his last couture offering.

But it wouldn’t be Valli without volume. This season’s versions didn’t come only in the form of high-low tulle gowns primed for the Cannes and Met Gala carpets, however. Some of Valli’s more voluminous shapes felt contained at the same time, like a bold hot-pink, high-necked version that felt slim in its excess. Also deliciously decadent were the feather masks that the looks were styled with, which made even the heftiest of gowns look as though they could waft off at any moment.

Valli experimented with bolder colours this season as well; his affinity for mustard and dandelion stood out in his two finale looks and a cropped ball gown decked with feathers. Those hot hues were punctuated by airy moments of ivory, coral, poppy, and deeper raspberry hints. Keep an eye out for the slew of upcoming red carpets—Valli’s latest cake toppers are sure to delight on the A-list as award season progresses. —Carrie Goldberg
