Introducing Anya Hindmarch SS18 Collection: Absurbia

In her pursuit of the extraordinary in the ordinary and the joy in the everyday, Anya Hindmarch incorporated new techniques and materials for her latest Spring/Summer 2018 collection entitled Absurbia. Employing the theme of Suburbia, Anya Hindmarch gave it a dazzling twist and showcased everything from refined 70’s housecoats in shiny patterned matelassé fabric to glamourized Anaglypta wallpaper-inspired prints and a lavish reinterpretation of a takeaway box.

At the heart of the collection, accessories ranged from shoes to day bags and bag accessories, with the spotlight on the new ‘Chubby Collection’, which features soft quilted Nappa leather with hand-stitching and oversized piping.

Inspired by Erwin Wurm’s Fat Car sculptures, Anya Hindmarch translated the cartoonish proportions into soft, lightweight bags that resemble furniture – think puffy barrel cushions and pleated round pillows – as well as chubby bag charms in an array of quirky symbols and alphabets.

For footwear, Anya Hindmarch revisited old designs, namely her bizarre shearling slides and creepers with mink egg, heart and eyes motifs, as well as presented a fresh selection of chubby cross over slides and glittery strap sandals.

The collection’s palette transitioned from various shades of blue and arsenic to warmer tones, such as salmon and cherry red, with glimmers of metallic shades of iris and silver. While symbols from past collections, including eggs, cherries, smileys, and eyes were incorporated – motifs of cats and exotic birds decorated a range of items, whether printed across a chubby cube bag or embroidered on a mesh tote bag and clutch.
