Sofia Coppola has long been following in the footsteps of her father, Francis Ford Coppola, who directed legendary films including The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Since 1998, the auteur has refined her signature style; she is known for aesthetically-driven, truthful portrayals of youth, femininity and womanhood. She has carved out a place for herself in Hollywood with now-iconic films: Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), and Priscilla (2023). It is not far-fetched to say that her distinct style is, in part, driven by her deep love and understanding of fashion.
Coppola’s relationship with fashion began early; she moved to Paris from Northern California at the age of 15 to take up a summer internship at the Chanel studio in Paris. In September 2025, she released a 450-page book, Chanel Haute Couture under her own publishing imprint, Mack. She indulges in her long-standing fascination with the Parisian fashion institution. In her signature style of collage, she presents the history of Chanel’s Haute Couture designs, from the eras of Gabrielle Chanel through to Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard.
She has previously explored the inspiration behind costume and set designs for her movies with books published under Mack, including Archive by Sofia Coppola (2023) and Virgin Suicides (2025), a photo-book featuring on-set images by Corrine Day to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary.
Solidifying the link between fashion and filmmaking in her life, Coppola’s latest documentary, Marc by Sofia, follows her friendship with fashion designer Marc Jacobs, detailing his storied career over three decades. The pair met at Marc Jacobs’s infamous Perry Ellis 1993 grunge collection, after which he was promptly dismissed from the American sportswear house. Jacobs himself recently referenced this collection in his Autumn/Winter 2026 showcase at New York Fashion Week.
Distributor A24 describes the documentary as “an intimate, unconventional portrait of Marc Jacobs, crafted by Sofia Coppola to capture the genius and singular universe of the iconic American designer”. It delves into the biggest pop culture moments that resulted as a result of their close collaboration, such as Jacobs’s influence in the award-winning 18th century costumes of Marie Antoinette (2006), Louis Vuitton’s SC bowling bag, the unique aesthetic of Daisy by Marc Jacobs fragrance campaigns, and Virgin Suicide stills printed on Heaven by Marc Jacobs skirts.
The documentary also promises interviews with Jacobs himself, as well as Spike Jonze, Roman Coppola, Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors, Priya Ahluwalia, Zandra Rhodes, and Ellen von Unwerth, Pharrell Williams, and more.
Marc by Sofia first premiered at Venice Film Festival in September 2025, and will be released to the public on March 27, 2026.
