With a collection boasting extravagant silhouettes and feminine touches here and there, 22 year old Silvia Teh took home the grand prize of a once-in-a-lifetime scholarship at the renowned Instituto Marangoni.
The Singaporean graduate of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts ousted nine other aspiring designers, including two of Malaysia’s very own — Alwyn Chan and Evelyn Chia.
A nod towards Japanese and Javanese culture, Teh presented a collection that evoked the cultural nuances of indo-orientalism. Voluminous skirts featuring agate-like prints bore resemblance to a Hokusai painting, while elsewhere, obi belts gave shape and structure to silk gilets in deep azure blues.
If the grand prize is anything to go by, we’re keeping a close eye on this rising star.
