Spring/Summer ’22: New York Fashion Week Shows That Hit The Mark

The last year and a half has been particularly hard for luxury fashion. The world on lockdown meant the closure of factories and retail stores, unemployment uncertainty and the inability to travel, all resulting in the decrease in consumer spending. Fashion weeks were halted in the fear of spreading COVID-19 even further, and what took place instead were virtual presentations or exceedingly limited-capacity shows.

While it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, the world has slowly returned to normalcy. Currently, Fashion Month is in full swing and we’re getting a high from seeing all of the fabulous displays of style so far. That’s not to say that strict COVID-19 protocols weren’t observed. In New York, under the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CFDA) directive, all attendees require proof of vaccination before entering any show.

So how did the shows, or rather, the new-season clothes and accessories fare? While many designers centred their collections around the idea of practicality and their hopes of getting through the pandemic for the last several seasons, S/S’22 is about the celebration of glitz and glamour and the return of normality. Think dramatic, skin-baring silhouettes, delightfully fun colours and an overall joyous vibe. Click through for the collections that caught our eye.

Coach

Taking the brand back to the very beginning, Stuart Vevers found inspiration in Bonnie Cashin, Coach’s very first head designer, resulting in the playful, retro-inspired collection that celebrates classic American fashion. The clothes are exaggerated with oversized silhouettes in bright, punchy colours, complemented by the usage of timeless prints from houndstooth to checks, all styled with playful beaded choker necklaces.
