You can always rely on Zoë Kravitz to bring something a little different to the red carpet, and this was definitely the case at last night’s SAG Awards, where the actress championed the return of the opera glove.
Kravitz looked impossibly stylish in a strapless peach design by Oscar de la Renta for the award show, which featured a bow detail at the waist and skimmed the floor. The Big Little Lies star chose to forgo any statement jewellery, wearing simply a pair of stud earrings and letting her other bold accessory do the talking, her long white opera gloves.
The traditional accessory was particularly popular in the 1940s through to the 1960s, with stars such as Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe consistently turning to them to add a little drama to their evening attire.
Although they have enjoyed less dominance since, now tending to be more closely associated with debutante balls than the red carpet, we have seen opera gloves pop up in a number of catwalk collections over the past few years (from Chanel to Erdem), while Amal Clooney famously donned a pair for one of her first major red-carpet appearances, the Golden Globes in 2015, which she used to accessorise her Dior couture gown.
Kravitz’s take on the glove was predictably cool, paring back her look as much as possible to avoid letting the traditional accessory look stuffy or old-fashioned – another excellent example of the star’s ability to push the style boundaries on the red carpet and land herself on every best dressed list going.
