Along the New York city pavements outside Fifth Avenue’s Bergdorf Goodman was the quintessential spot to see Bill Cunningham in action: perched atop his bicycle, camera in hand, snapping stylish New Yorkers as they walked by. Just days after the city and fashion community mourned the death of the legendary Times photographer, a petition emerged to rename his go-to spot at 57th Street and Fifth Avenue “Bill Cunningham Corner” and yesterday, this wish was temporarily granted by Mayor Bill de Blasio.

While the mayor has the power to rename a street for a few days (in this case, the renaming will last for a week), for a permanent change to be made, there will have to be a legislative process. Although WWD reports that chances of the city council renaming that particular street corner are low due to a moratorium on street naming in the district, the designer Jeffrey Banks is also reportedly commissioning a sculpture of Cunningham on his bicycle that would be placed near his signature haunt.
