Gwyneth Paltrow’s interpretation of Emma Woodhouse in the 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen’s comedy had critics offering their thumbs-up praise, as did Alicia Silverstone with her more thickly veiled ode a year earlier in Amy Heckerling’s Clueless.
