Living Luxurious With Hennessy Paradis

Hennessy Paradis – the taste of luxury.

For over two and a half centuries, Hennessy has built quite a reputation and image for itself as one of the most exceptional spirits to exist. Available in over 160 countries, the house of Hennessy, or ‘Maison’ as it’s referred to, has continuously set the international standard in quality and excellence for cognacs.

Where it all began

The Hennessy distillery was started in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish military officer who served in the French army under the King of France, Louis XV. Upon his retirement, Hennessy moved to the Cognac region of France and began distilling brandies for export to countries like the United Kingdom, United States, and Ireland.

Hennessy’s son James was working with his father, and in 1813, christened the company Jas Hennessy & Co. The younger Hennessy was also responsible for hiring the Maison’s Master Blender, Jean Fillioux. Since then, members of the Fillioux family have filled the role of Master Blender at Hennessy. In-depth knowledge, passionate inspiration, and the never-ending quest for industrial excellence have been passed down in the Fillioux family through eight generations spanning over 250 years.

In 1840, Hennessy took its place as the world’s leading exporter of brandy and hasn’t budged from the spot since, setting several industry standards. The Maison was also responsible for introducing star ratings and cognac gradings like V.S.O.P. and X.O to the industry.

Knowing the eaux-de-vie

Eaux-de-vie (which translates to “water of life”) in the cognac industry refers to a category of spirit that is distilled from any fruit apart from grapes and is typically unaged. Hennessy owns more than 470,000 casks of over 100 variations of cognac eaux-de-vie – all of which have undergone specific processes of blending, as well as different lengths of maturation to create a variety of cognacs in different grades.

Some of the Maison’s more expensive, limited-edition cognacs can contain more than 100 eaux- de-vie, and these cognacs are still blended by the Master Blenders from the Fillioux family. Examples of premium, limited edition Hennessy include Richard Hennessy, Hennessy X.X.O, and Hennessy Paradis.

A Taste Of Paradis

In 1979, Master Blender Maurice Fillioux hand-crafted an incredible blend of spirit that was to become Hennessy Paradis – a supple, light, and round cognac. Its silky flavour features a rich-yet-mellow fruitiness that ends on notes of robust, aromatic spice.

Recognisable notes in the Hennessy Paradis include cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon for spice, crystallised fruit and honey for sweetness, roses for a floral hint, and a touch of truffle for some grounding earthiness. The cognac’s opulent hue of copper-gold is testament to its time well-spent ageing in oak casks before being double-distilled in copper stills.
