While many celebrities wore white roses to symbolise their support of the Time’s Up movement at last night’s Grammys, Lorde took her support to the next level with her look.
The singer wore a striking red tulle Valentino gown and, instead of accessorising with a white rose, she hand-stitched a feminist essay by Jenny Holzer onto the back of her dress. Taking to Instagram, she shared a close-up look at the statement-making accessory, writing, “My version of a white rose—THE APOCALYPSE WILL BLOSSOM —an excerpt from the greatest of all time, Jenny Holzer.”
“Rejoice! Our times are intolerable,” reads the Holzer-penned essay. “Take coverage for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstance can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom.”
The excerpt chosen by Lorde is from Holzer’s 1977 collection titled, “Inflammatory Essays,” many of which are still relevant in today’s political landscape.

Before the awards ceremony last night, it was revealed that Lorde was the only Album of the Year nominee not asked to perform solo at this year’s Grammys. The singer, who was nominated for her album Melodrama, was also the only woman nominated in the category up against Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino and Bruno Mars—who took home the prize.
Each of the male nominees, however, was offered a solo performance spot at last night’s show—making her hand-stitched feminist essay all the more poignant.
