On the last day of their weeklong journey around India and Bhutan, Prince William paid homage to his late mother.

Diana was 30 at the time that she was shot posing solo by the monument. Just a few months later, news broke that she and Prince Charles were separating. Many royal pundits (yes, that’s a thing) believed this photo was a harbinger of what was to come.

The significance is not lost on William. “He completely understands that people come to visit this place with his mother in mind,” but his spokesperson says that for Will and Kate, this photo was about “making new memories.”
