In an ambitious move, Virginie Viard presented the Chanel Métiers d’art 2022/23 collection in Dakar, Senegal last year, showcasing a myriad of seventies-inspired looks on the runway. The presentation held at Dakar’s former Palais de Justice was accompanied by an artistic programme that celebrated “the artistic scene of this leading leading cultural capital”. Following this, Chanel’s colourful journey with fashion and the arts brought a host of fashion’s biggest names and celebrities to the fashionable city of Tokyo. Staged in a new city, Chanel continued the “artistic conversation initiated in Dakar” with a series of videos, performances and workshops that combined the creative vigour of Paris, Dakar and Tokyo.

The collection paid homage to the vivacious spirit of the ’70s with bold and easygoing silhouettes that portrayed a vivid sense of electrifying freedom and confidence. Elegant tweed sets, flowing dresses, flared trousers, platform shoes and striking motifs—both geometric and floral—dominated the runway along with beaded vests and skirts, denim staples and delicate lace. These were saturated with emblematic codes of the House that were reimagined by Viard “in a creative dialogue with the Maison d’arts artisans”. Blooming camellias, cascading droplets of pearls, jewelled buttons and intricate embroidery punctuated the vibrant collection whilst adding layers of dimension to the articulate and feminine pieces.
