Meryl Streep: I Want Oprah to Run for President

Oprah Winfrey’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille award at last night’s Golden Globes was so moving that fans promptly described it as the start of a presidential campaign. Many of the Twitter responses even included hopes for her to run for office. Though Winfrey hasn’t directly addressed the presidential chatter surrounding her speech, Meryl Streep revealed that she personally supports the idea.

“She launched a rocket tonight. I want her to run for president,” Streep told The Washington Post after last night’s ceremony. “I don’t think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn’t have a choice.”

Oprah’s longtime partner Stedman Graham also teased that the media mogul would be open to running for office. “It’s up to the people,” he told The LA Times. “She would absolutely do it.”

However, like Streep said, Oprah hasn’t personally declared any intention to campaign for the presidency. In fact, she’s publicly declared she’s against it. “I will never run for public office,” Winfrey told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2017. “That’s a pretty definitive thing.”

And when asked if she could defeat Donald Trump in the 2020 election, she responded, “I don’t know. I don’t know the answer to that. But I will never have to know the answer to that, because I will never run for public office.”

However, prior to that interview, Winfrey wasn’t always so staunchly against entering the political sphere, especially after seeing Trump get elected president.

When David Rubenstein mentioned to her in a March 2017 interview, “you don’t need government experience to be elected President of the United States,” Oprah answered: “That’s what I thought! I thought, ‘Oh gee, I don’t have the experience. I don’t know enough. And now, I’m thinking, ‘Oh! Oh.'”

At least “oh” is better than “no.”

However, in an appearance on The Late Show a few months prior, Oprah summed up her stance on running for president in one word: “NEVER!”

We’ll see about that.
