The Met has announced the next major fashion exhibition that will be taking place at the Costume Institute – and it will be centred around the wardrobe of a woman whose name you have probably never heard. ‘In Pursuit of Fashion: The Sandy Schreier Collection’ will display the private collection of one of the world’s most prolific fashion collectors.

Sandy Schreier – who lives in Detroit – has one of the most prestigious fashion collections in the world, housing 96 years of fashion history in her 15,000 designer garments. 80 of these have been chosen for this exhibition, which will not only be a chronicle of fashion history, but will tell the story of Schreier’s fascinating journey into becoming one of the world’s most most famous fashion collectors.

Although this will mark the first solo exhibition dedicated to Schreier’s impressive collection, it is not the first time that her pieces have featured in important museums, with the collector previously lending to various shows in the past.

“She was a pioneer in seeing fashion as an art form that could be pursued and collected; when she started almost no individuals and very few museums were thinking about fashion in that way,” Jessica Regan, associate curator of the Costume Institute, said.

‘In Pursuit of Fashion: The Sandy Schreier Collection’ will open at the Met on the 27 November, 2020.
